World Child Obesity Day
A Global Movement Started by Prof Dr. Sanjay Borude
World Child Obesity Day (WCOD) was founded on May 22, 2022 by Dr. Sanjay Borude with a mission to create awareness about the rapidly growing epidemic of childhood obesity and its long-term impact on health, confidence, and quality of life.
Through the initiative of the Generation XL Obesity Foundation, World Child Obesity Day was established to encourage parents, schools, healthcare professionals, policy makers, and communities to take collective action toward healthier childhoods. (Mid-day)
Today, World Child Obesity Day serves as a platform to spread awareness about:
- Early detection of childhood obesity
- Healthy eating habits
- Importance of physical activity
- Mental and emotional effects of obesity
- Prevention of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep disorders, and fatty liver disease
Why Childhood Obesity Matters
Childhood obesity is no longer just a cosmetic concern — it is a serious medical condition affecting millions of children worldwide. Studies and clinical observations show that obesity during childhood often continues into adulthood, increasing the risk of chronic diseases later in life. (Mid-day)
According to awareness initiatives led by Dr. Sanjay Borude:
- Around 55% of obese children become obese adolescents
- Around 80% of obese adolescents become obese adults
- Childhood obesity also affects emotional health, confidence, social interaction, and academic performance (Mid-day)
The Vision Behind WCOD
The vision of World Child Obesity Day is simple yet powerful:
“Healthy children today create a healthier world tomorrow.”
The movement focuses on:
- Awareness and education
